All of our doctors have been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists. A Fellow is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist who has completed six years of core and advanced training.

Dr James Swan is a Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. He has been practicing in Geelong since 1987.

James graduated with Honours from Monash University in 1977. He undertook his postgraduate specialist training at The Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in the United Kingdom, before returning to Australia.

James is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and is also a Member of the College in the United Kingdom. He is a specialist at the University Hospital Geelong and is involved in educating undergraduate and postgraduate medical students.

James lives with his wife and five children in Geelong.

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Emily Huning graduated with honours from Monash University in 2002. Emily worked in several different fields of medicine before beginning her specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology.

Emily trained at the Mercy Hospital for Women and the Northern Hospital, also gaining experience working in rural and remote Australia and East Africa.

Emily completed her advanced training in northwest Tasmania and in Geelong. She joined the staff at the University Hospital Geelong where she still works. Emily is active in teaching and training of medical students and junior doctors. Her research interests are in service provision for women in rural and regional areas and maternal critical illness.

Emily lives in Geelong, and is delighted to be part of the Geelong Maternity Group.

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Jodie Benson graduated medicine from The University of Melbourne. She commenced her specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash Medical Centre.

Jodie completed her advanced training in Ireland, working at the Cork University Maternity Hospital. She became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2011. On her return to Australia, Jodie commenced work in Warrnambool, where she grew up.

Having initially worked full time at the University Hospital Geelong, Jodie is currently a VMO and is actively involved in the teaching of medical students and junior doctors.

Jodie sits on the Stillbirth subcommittee of the Consultative Council of Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity at the Victorian Department of Health.

Jodie has two daughters and lives in Geelong.

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Stephanie Johnston is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with special interests in infertility and high-risk obstetrics.

Stephanie studied medicine at the University of Melbourne and undertook her specialty training at the Royal Women’s Hospital, Melbourne, where she continued to work as a consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist.

Stephanie began working at the University Hospital Geelong in 2017. She is a clinical senior lecturer with Deakin University and recently completed a Masters of Reproductive Medicine with the University of New South Wales.

Stephanie lives in Geelong with her husband and two daughters.

Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

Dr Michael Shembrey studied medicine at the University of Melbourne. He completed postgraduate specialist training at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne and at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in the United Kingdom.

Michael has practiced in Geelong as a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist since 1993. He is a clinical senior lecturer at the Deakin University Medical School, and is also involved in teaching and training of junior doctors at University Hospital Geelong.

Michael has been a Visiting Medical Specialist at University Hospital Geelong since 1993, and was the Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at University Hospital Geelong between 2013 – 2019. Michael is a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Michael lives in Geelong with his wife and they have two sons.
